Frequently Asked Questions
We invite you to review some of Black Isle Renewables’ most frequently asked questions and, if you have a question of your own, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
+ How much will a heat pump cost to run?
Running costs are affected by many different things, for example how large your house is or how warm you prefer your rooms to be, so it is difficult to be precise. A well designed and installed heat pump can offer significant savings over for example LPG or electric heating. When you ask us to quote for a heat pump, as part of our design process we will give you an estimate of running costs based on a fixed set of parameters.
+ Will a heat pump provide enough hot water for my house?
Yes. A heat pump can supply more than enough heat for both space heating and hot water without the need for a backup boiler. When designing your system, our team take into account factors such as number of bathrooms, lifestyle and occupancy to ensure a plentiful supply.
+ What registrations do you hold?
Black Isle Renewables have held a MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) certification for fourteen years – to achieve this we are independently audited every year, and if you intend applying for government assistance to help with installing your heat pump you must use an MCS registered installer. Our MCS registration number is NAP28781.
We are also registered with RECC (Renewable Energy Consumer Code) – again this is independently audited and ensures that we comply with all relevant consumer legislation.
Black Isle Renewables' engineers are manufacturer trained and we are accredited Mitsubishi ServiceNET partners, NIBE VIP installers, Kensa Service Partners and have training with other manufacturers such as IVT and Grant.
+ What warranties do you offer?
Every unit we install is covered by a manufacturers warranty. We also offer a 2 year workmanship warranty as standard.
Black Isle Renewables' recognition as ServiceNET Partners for Mitsubishi means that we are able to offer as standard a 7 year parts & labour warranty on all Mitsubishi Ecodan heat pumps. Full details can be found here.
As Nibe VIP installers we offer a 7 year parts & labour warranty on all Nibe products in mainland Scotland (includes Skye) as standard. For the Scottish Islands the warranty is for parts only.
Warranties are reliant upon systems receiving an annual maintenance visit by a qualified engineer.
+ What grants or incentives could I be eligible for?
There are currently two main financial incentives available:
- The RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) for renewable heating systems such as heat pumps and solar thermal panels
- In Scotland, an interest free loan available through Home Energy Scotland
Our Grants and Incentives page has further details.
+ Do heat pumps work well with radiators?
Yes they do. Heat pumps work effectively with a range of different emitter systems including underfloor heating, steel panel radiators, cast iron radiators or low temperature fan convectors. Our design team will discuss the best options with you.
+ How much maintenance do heat pumps need?
Like any heating system, heat pumps benefit from annual servicing. This ensures that mechanical connections are sound, settings are optimal, and that the system is working properly. An annual service is also a requirement for receipt of RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) and for continued validity of extended warranties. We have an annual service plan available, details of which can be found on our Servicing page.
+ Can my system provide online connectivity?
Both your heat pump and underfloor heating systems can be connected to the internet to allow monitoring via smartphone, tablet or desktop computer.
Nibe's system is called UpLink. Mitsubishi offer MELcloud and the Heatmiser Neohub gives you online connectivity for your underfloor heating. All apps are available on both Android and iOS.
